Jaan Panesar studied medicine at Northwestern University, Chicago, USA and did her specialist training in ENT at The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, Northwick Park, Charing Cross and St Bartholomew's Hospitals. She has also worked at Great Ormond Street and completed a paediatric research fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

Her other interests include:
- Teaching - She has a keen interest in teaching and has teamed up with Essentially Medical to run the 'Lunch and Learn' programme for busy GP's at their surgeries. She is also a registered assessor of trainee surgeons with Healthcare Assessment and Training (HcAT).
- Ethical Practices - She is a member of the Ethics Committee at Luton and Dunstable NHS Trust.
- Research - She is the West Anglia ENT specialty Group member for UK comprehensive research network (UKCRN).
- Charity - She actively participates in programmes organised by Age Concern.
