Otoplasty aims to correct protruding ears. Protuberant or bat ears can cause a great deal of distress in a child as they provoke teasing and occasional bullying. The operation does not alter the patient's hearing, but it may improve appearance and self-confidence. The operation is performed before the child starts school usually at five or six years of age. Having surgery at a young age has two benefits: the cartilage is more pliable, making it easier to reshape, and the child will experience the psychological benefits of the cosmetic improvement. However, a patient may have the surgery at any age and adults with uncorrected ears may also wish to be considered for such surgery.
