Nose bleeds

Children often suffer from frequent nose bleeds. The bleeding can take place at any time, in the school play ground, at night when the child is fast asleep or when the weather gets hot. Frequent nose bleeds can leave the child weak and pale. The nose bleeds are easily controlled by nasal cautery with a silver nitrate stick. The silver nitrate stick lightly burns the superficial blood vessels in the front of the nose; this is the place where the nose bleeds most commonly occur. The procedure is done in the clinic after the nose has been numbed with a little topical anaesthetic. An antibiotic cream is then applied to the area.
