THE NOSE

We are specialists who are here to help you.  We treat a diverse range of conditions relating to the nose including :

Blocked Nose:
A blocked nose is often uncomfortable and difficult to tolerate. While very common in the UK this can often go untreated and cause unpleasant side effects when patients have to breath through their mouths – side effects can include excessive dryness in the mouth, which can damage the gums, and sometimes cause drooling. Sense of smell and taste can also be affected.

Catarrh:
The symptoms of catarrh is translatable into several different meanings – from blocked nose and sinus pains, to throaty symptoms, tickly cough and post nasal drip, lump in throat sensation, continuous throat clearing and phlegm. All can be treated by our specialist ENT Laser.

Sinusitis:
This is when the lining of the sinuses become inflamed usually after a cold that is persistent. Symptoms range from headaches to sinus pain and include blocked nasal passages, high temperature and green or yellow discharges. Most inflammations clear up in two to three weeks but clinicians can recommend decongestants, saline nose baths and antibiotics if the condition continues.

Adenoids:
Adenoids are small lumps of tissue at the back of the nose that part of the immune system. They normally start to shrink from the age of seven and should have disappeared by adulthood. It may be necessary to remove them if they become swollen because of an infection, allergies or to combat recurrent ear infections such as Glue Ear.

They are removed by an adenoidectomy, a quick day surgery procedure performed at hospital by an ENT surgeon.

Broken Nose:
Most of these injuries heal naturally in two to three weeks with the use of ice packs and painkillers. But if the nose appears deformed then do not try to straighten it yourself – seek advice from a GP. If you have a nosebleed that does not stop, an open wound, numbness or blurred vision then you should visit an Accident Emergency department straight away.

Hay Fever:
A common seasonal allergy to grass and plant pollen, it is also known as allergic rhinitis. It is most common in children and teenager but can occur at any age and it is estimated that 18 million in the UK experience hay fever. The worst season, when grass, plants and shrubs release pollen, runs from March to October. The best advice is to avoid the triggers that cause hay fever but GPs can prescribe medication as well as using over the counter treatments.

Nasal and Sinus Cancer:
This is rare and mainly affects men aged 50 to 60-years-old and symptoms include reduced smell, nose bleeds, persistent blocked nose and pain and numbness in the face. A GP can refer to an ENT surgeon for further tests to determine if an operation, chemotherapy or radiotherapy are needed.

Rhinoplasty:
Deformed shaped noses can be improved with rhinoplasty, an operation under general anaesthetic to correct the size or angle and to relieve blockages that are cause breathing difficulties. It is important to consult a specialist surgeon if you are considering an operation to re-shape your nose.
